Collection of apprenticeships. 1809-1895.

Most of these indentures are from the 1830s through the 1860s and emanated from either the Church or North family at the New Lebanon, New York, Shaker community. Typically, this kind of document was signed by the parents of a child being given over to the care of the Shakers and countersigned by a Shaker official. The parents agreed not to interfere with the child's upbringing or to remove the child from the community. In return, the Shakers agreed to provide the indentured child the necessities of life, to educate him or her in school and for a trade, and to give him or her the freedom to choose, at age twenty-one (or often at age eighteen for girls), whether or not he or she wanted to become a Shaker. All the child had to do was behave and accept with equanimity his or her lot in life until maturity. From a genealogical perspective, these documents always mention the name of at least one parent, and occasionally both. The child's birthday is also given. Rarely, additional information about the parents is given, such as an occupation, or the fact that a husband has deserted his family.
